Avoid Jonah's Error

THURSDAY
JULY.12

Jonah 3:10 (GNB), Jonah 4:1-3 (GNB)
God saw what they did; he saw that they had given up their wicked behavior. So he changed his mind and did not punish them as he had said he would. *Jonah was very unhappy about this and became angry. So he prayed, "LORD, didn't I say before I left home that this is just what you would do? That's why I did my best to run away to Spain! I knew that you are a loving and merciful God, Now then, LORD, let me die. I am better off dead than alive."

Author PhotoThe reason why Jonah initially ran from the assignment that God gave him (Jon.1:1-3) was because his attitude was similar to that of the elder brother of the prodigal son. He could not comprehend the loving heart of God. He might also have previously heard of the people of Nineveh and somehow, believed that they were undeserving of a second chance. Truth is he stood in judgement of them and wanted them to suffer the consequences of their actions. When he spoke God's word to them, he did not anticipate that they would turn to God and/or that God would have mercy on them. In the end,
Jonah ended up feeling very frustrated about everything.

If we do not want to end up feeling like Jonah felt, we must never desire that evil befall anyone or group of people, no matter how bad or evil they may be. We need to always join God to sincerely desire their restoration back to Him. Remember, it is not God's will that any man should perish but that ALL men come to repentance, 2Pet.3:9. They can turn to God at anytime and God can have mercy on them. Also remember that it was by the mercy of God that you were saved; not because you were better than or more deserving. Desire that the same mercy of God that you have found also be made available to them. Be a minister of reconciliation and not of condemnation. Don't be like the scribes and Pharisees who wanted to stone the woman caught in adultery (John 8:2-11). Be like Jesus who
God used to restore the woman by His mercy. Allow God to use you to restore the lost to Himself.

PRAYER:  Merciful God, pour out Your saving touch and restoration upon all those in my life that need Your saving grace right now.
